If you get the animal from a non-reputable place (like a bait shop, grocery store, etc) then you have to be prepared for the animal to probably die even though you put a lot of effort into creating a sustainable and enriching environment. These animals have certainly gone through a lot of stress, which takes a toll on their health in the short and long run. And for marine animals, especially crabs, stress can be a death sentence, even moreso when they're trying to molt. You can at least say that you gave the creature some comfort in their life and managed to maybe gain some more experience taking care of that particular animal if you didn't have any before.
